An integrated formicarium for large Ponerinae: a removable, moisture-resistant gypsum block with three spacious 15 mm-high living sections, covered by glass and installed beside a ventilated acrylic foraging arena. Two ports are used for hydration and external connections, while a movable partition lets the keeper expose only one section to a queen or small colony and open more space as it grows. It is designed for large predatory ants such as Harpegnathos, Diacamma, Odontomachus, Pachycondyla, Odontoponera and Neoponera. Keep a moist-to-drier gradient in the gypsum without saturating it, offer water and insect prey in the arena, remove food remains promptly, and use secure escape prevention when keeping fast or stinging species.

A founding incubator made from a glass test tube filled one-third to one-half with water. A tight cotton barrier separates the reservoir from a dry chamber, while a loose cotton entrance plug provides airflow. It creates a stable humid microclimate for a queen, brood and first workers of most claustral species. Choose a diameter in which the queen can turn, keep it horizontal, dark and still, prevent flooding and offer a fresh tube before the water runs out or cotton becomes dirty.

A layered laser-cut acrylic nest with a separate refillable sponge chamber. Water added through a small port evaporates between the layers, creating humid chambers near the sponge and drier ones farther away. The clear screw-fastened nest is secure, observable and often expandable. Compact versions suit starter and small Lasius, Tetramorium and Pheidole, plus correctly sized Camponotus or Messor. Add measured water, keep one zone dry, clean the sponge and prevent condensation or stagnant water.

Good for growing Lasius, Tetramorium, Formica and many Camponotus colonies. Check the sponge regularly because plastic itself stores little water.

Plastic stores almost no water, so check reservoirs, test seams and mesh for escapes, avoid heat that warps PLA and cover the brood area from light.

A bottom reservoir or side channel moistens the lower layers while the surface stays drier, forming a vertical humidity gradient. Suitable for established Lasius, Myrmica, Tetramorium, Formica and appropriately dry Messor colonies. Compact soil in layers, water slowly, keep drainage visible and attach a clean outworld. Too much water floods galleries; dry loose soil collapses, and the queen or brood may remain hidden.

A slim transparent farm packed with moistened sand-clay or sand-loam that supports self-dug tunnels close to the viewing panes. Clay binds grains and retains more water than pure sand, suiting Lasius, Tetramorium, Formica and dry-adapted Messor. Premix and dampen before filling, compact without removing all pore space, hydrate one side in small doses and let it settle before adding an established colony. Pure sand, rapid drying or excess water can collapse or flood galleries; seed stores need a dry zone.

A planted glass terrarium with drainage, moisture-retaining living soil, leaf litter, moss and a compatible clean-up community of springtails, isopods and microorganisms. Decomposers process fungi and organic debris while plants reuse nutrients, creating a functional miniature biotope for established tropical or moisture-loving colonies. It is not maintenance-free: use pesticide-free quarantined materials, establish plants and microfauna before adding ants, preserve both moist and drier refuges, remove oversized food remains and control isopod numbers. Ants may prey on or compete with the clean-up crew, and the queen and brood can remain hidden.

A flat fired-clay or ceramic nest tile with moulded chambers, a glass or acrylic cover and a separate hydration well using a sponge or unglazed porous zone. Glazed chambers resist staining and wipe clean, while the unglazed element creates a local moisture gradient. Suitable for small and growing Lasius, Tetramorium, Myrmica, Formica and correctly sized Camponotus colonies. Add measured water, keep part dry, prevent drops and thermal shock, and use only food-safe fully fired glaze, pigments and sealants.

Natural Log (Biotope Setup)

A dry seasoned log or thick branch with natural hollows or carved galleries inside a ventilated escape-proof terrarium, plus a separate water source. It recreates wood nesting for established Camponotus, Colobopsis, Crematogaster or Temnothorax matched to the chamber size. Keep the wood mostly dry, provide a cotton-plugged water tube, and use only pesticide-free hardwood that has been heat-treated or quarantined. Observation is limited and ants may enlarge hidden galleries, so inspect the shell, seal cracks and replace wood affected by rot or persistent mould.

A large planted glass biotope combining a drained land zone with filtered open water. For ants, water is scenery and a humidity source, not the nest: provide an elevated dry cork, wood or connected nest above the waterline and protect every shore with mesh, floating cork or shallow escape ramps. Suitable only for established tropical or arboreal colonies such as many Camponotus and other humidity-tolerant tree ants. Strong ventilation, aquarium-safe materials, stable drainage, water maintenance and a secure lid are essential because high humidity promotes mould and open water creates drowning and escape risks.

Stone / Dense Concrete Nest

A heavy nest cast from dense concrete or carved from natural or artificial stone, usually covered with glass or acrylic. Unlike porous Ytong, its body absorbs little water, so a porous insert, side well or replaceable sponge must provide a localized moisture gradient. Its thermal mass and chew resistance suit established medium or large Camponotus, Formica, Lasius and Messor colonies. Use a strong waterproof base, heat only one edge, inspect seals and avoid moving the occupied nest.

A hybrid nest with an acrylic frame and clear cover around a cast gypsum floor or insert. An external reservoir, tube or wick feeds the gypsum slowly without opening the chambers. Acrylic adds strength, visibility and expansion ports; gypsum stores water and creates a gradient. It suits small and medium Lasius, Tetramorium, Formica, Myrmica and Camponotus colonies. Refill in small portions, preserve a dry zone and monitor condensation and mould.

A milled natural-cork insert behind glass or acrylic, often paired with a foraging arena. Cork provides grip, insulation and a wood-like microhabitat; ants may reshape its softer edges. It suits dry wood-nesting Camponotus and other arboreal ants, but not species requiring constantly wet brood chambers. Keep it mostly dry, provide drinking water in the outworld, ventilate well and replace mouldy or damaged cork.

A precision-milled hardwood nest, commonly beech, with shaped chambers under a clear acrylic cover and removable dowels that open more space as the colony grows. It suits wood-nesting Camponotus, Crematogaster, Colobopsis and related arboreal ants preferring low humidity. Wood offers grip and insulation but absorbs stains. Keep it dry, supply water in the outworld, use a red cover and watch for swelling, cracks, gnawing, mites or mould.

Stone / Aerated Concrete (Ytong) Nest

A prefabricated nest carved from porous aerated concrete (Ytong), normally covered by glass or acrylic. A side well or tray lets the stone wick water and create a stable moisture gradient. It suits earth-nesting Lasius, Formica, Myrmica and medium-to-large Camponotus; a thin sand-clay layer may be added to chamber floors. Ytong is brittle, needs a waterproof base, and its edges must be sealed carefully for very small ants.

It suits established small colonies of digging Lasius, Tetramorium, Messor and Formica. Compact in layers, do not use for a lone founding queen, provide separate drinking water and prevent vibration, flooding, cracks and tunnel collapse.
